A barber shop's dreams up in smoke
Among those hardest hit is Mr. D Cut Barber Shop, a family-owned institution for 15 years. Jesenia Garcia, whose husband owns the shop, arrived to a scene of chaos and despair. “It’s very, very hard,” she lamented, the weight of the loss palpable in her voice. “For this to have happened to us is such a sudden shock. This was everything to us.” The shop, a cornerstone of the neighborhood, is a complete loss, according to Garcia.
The fire’s rapid escalation, fueled by what investigators suspect may be an electrical fault in the back of the building, quickly engulfed the first floor and spread to apartments above and a neighboring business. Three individuals, including a firefighter, sustained minor injuries and were treated on the scene. The Nassau County fire marshal is currently conducting a thorough investigation to pinpoint the precise cause.
Beyond the barber: pizza and upholstery affected
While Mr. D Cut Barber Shop bears the brunt of the damage, a beloved local pizza shop and an upholstery store also suffered substantial losses. The cleaning crew, who smelled smoke and alerted authorities just in time, narrowly escaped unscathed. But for the owners, the future remains uncertain.
Garcia’s plea for support resonates deeply: “All we ask is for your prayers, for everybody’s prayers, and support and love, moreso than anything. That will mean more to us than anything.” The family's resilience, however, shines through the devastation; they’re already contemplating a fresh start, determined to rebuild from the ashes.
