According to Bruce Hale, an Orange County Fire Authority engineer who witnessed the event, a caravan of off-road vehicles was returning to their campsite on April 2nd when the Polaris RZR carrying 15-year-old Brooklyn Mallet and her friend from Yucaipa overturned and caught fire. Hale, along with other firefighters and family members, sprang into action. “They were trapped,” he recounted, “but we were able to extinguish the flames quickly, using fire extinguishers and medical supplies we carry in our vehicles.”
Mallet, a member of the Santiago High School varsity dance team in Corona, has already undergone three surgeries and remains hospitalized at a burn unit in Las Vegas. Her friend suffered significant burns to the left side of her face, neck, chest, and arm. Both girls are reportedly receiving ongoing medical treatment, and the families are bracing for an extended stay in Las Vegas, potentially for the next three months.
