Exploring italy's 'forgotten' dolomites: a less-visited paradise

Deep in the northeastern Italian Alps lies a lesser-known gem, often overshadowed by the more famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Val Gardena. The 'forgotten' Dolomites stretch eastward, promising a tranquil escape from the crowds. Belluno serves as the main gateway, just a two-hour train ride or drive north of Venice.

Traditional mountain culture thrives

Here, local councils, or Regole di Comunità, still manage the land and forests collectively, sustaining artisans and alpine farmers scattered throughout the region. These resilient communities have shaped their lives around shared work, and traditional dishes like Pastìn, malga cheeses, and polenta remain staples, often enjoyed over grappa at the end of the day.

Paths lead to stunning vistas, including Monte Pelmo and the beech woods of Cansiglio, where deer call at dusk. It's an excellent place to immerse oneself in authentic mountain culture, and this writer's favorite spots in the area are many.
