Officers were dispatched around 4:22 p.m. after reports of riders operating what authorities termed "illegal e-motos, illegal pocket bikes, and e-bikes recklessly" throughout the city. The coordinated response led to the dispersal of the group and the apprehension of the teenager on suspicion of reckless driving.

Five other riders received citations for vehicle code violations. Authorities also seized five illegal e-motos and one illegal pocket bike.

Chief of Police Wally Hebeish emphasized the significant public safety risks posed by these unauthorized vehicles. "Traffic safety remains a priority," he stated, adding that the department will continue to pursue citations, arrests, and vehicle seizures in response to reckless driving.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenge cities face in regulating the use of these rapidly proliferating electric vehicles. The sheer number of participants highlights both the appeal and the inherent dangers associated with this form of unregulated street riding. The seized vehicles represent a tangible consequence of these actions.

The police action serves as a stark reminder that the allure of quick thrills on these devices carries serious legal ramifications. The city is likely to see continued enforcement efforts as authorities grapple with the evolving landscape of micromobility and its associated risks.
