Kennywood Postpones Thunderbolt Closure, Extending Ride Season Until September

Pittsburgh, PA – Kennywood Park has announced a change of plans, extending the operational period for its iconic Thunderbolt roller coaster until September 12th. Originally slated for maintenance, the closure has been delayed to align with the end of the summer season following Labor Day.

General Manager Ricky Spicuzza Explains the Decision

According to Kennywood’s general manager, Ricky Spicuzza, the decision was made after a thorough assessment of resources and timing. “That allows our expert team of carpenters and ride technicians to get through there and update the track, make upgrades to the structures that we do every year for our wooden coasters,” Spicuzza stated. This routine maintenance is crucial for preserving the park’s historic wooden coasters.

Annual Maintenance Procedures

Kennywood typically closes one of its wooden coasters at the end of the summer for essential upkeep. The Thunderbolt, with approximately 3,200 feet of track, requires significant attention. Crews will focus on replacing lumber, bolts, joists, and ledgers – vital structural components – to ensure the ride’s continued safety and performance. Typically, they address 400 to 700 feet of the track during the off-season, but this section hasn't been addressed in a while.

Commitment to Ride Quality

Spicuzza emphasized the importance of this maintenance, stating, “The goal is to make sure that you and your mandatory riding partner will be able to ride it for the opening day of the season in 2027.” He described the Thunderbolt as “the king of coasters,” necessitating a proactive plan for its ongoing care and preservation. This extension provides park visitors with a few more weeks to enjoy this beloved Pittsburgh tradition.
