The journey to those titles was far from easy. Todd's team faced significant obstacles, including relocation to a temporary school, a lack of proper practice facilities, and the absence of a dedicated weight room. Despite these hardships, the incoming freshmen class of 2021 persevered, winning state titles as juniors and seniors, demonstrating remarkable resilience and a commitment to excellence under Coach Todd’s leadership.
A tragedy strikes: the shooting incident
The euphoria of their third state title in December 2023 was abruptly shattered by a tragic incident. A shooting off-campus involving two players, Xavier Mayfield and Nathaniel Coleman, left Coleman paralyzed. Mayfield was arrested on an aggravated assault charge. Todd spoke poignantly about the event, emphasizing the consequences of choices and the importance of supporting players through difficult times, stating, “We still going to love you no matter what.”
Lessons from the past: avoiding pitfalls
Coach Todd’s perspective is deeply shaped by past tragedies. He recalls the death of 16-year-old Patrick Hill in 2005 and the infamous Carter High School scandal of 1988, where a state title was stripped due to accusations of ineligibility and grade-fixing. A family legacy and personal loss
Todd’s connection to South Oak Cliff runs deep, stemming from his family’s involvement in the Dallas ISD. His grandfather was a respected principal at the school. However, his coaching career has also been marked by profound personal loss. His mother, Cheryle Todd, who battled multiple sclerosis and passed away in 2013, is dearly missed, and her absence fuels his drive to achieve greatness for his team.
