Holtz, ranked a staggering 3,160 places below the field’s top amateur, earned his spot by winning the US Mid-Amateur Championship. This unlikely victory has ignited a buzz, fueled by his improbable journey and a background seemingly far removed from elite golf.
From basketball to ball striking
His path to Augusta is a curious one. A former Division One basketball player at Illinois State, Holtz traded the hardwood for the fairway after a brief stint on mini-tours. He honed his swing, not through relentless practice, but through a natural aptitude, a shooter’s eye for precision. “This is a dream come true really,” Holtz stated after his opening round. “The experience as a whole is incredible. It was definitely not what I wanted to do on the golf course today, but I had a lot of fun. You know, like I said, I’ve kind of already won.”
