A goalless first half gave way to a more open second period, with Ryan Naderi opening the scoring for the home side on 30 minutes before Dujon Sterling doubled the lead four minutes into the restart.

However, the visitors hit back just before the interval through Amar Fatah's strike, and Thelo Aasgaard momentarily restored Rangers' two-goal advantage in the 52nd minute.

Zach Sapsford pulled one back for United with 18 minutes remaining, but Bojan Miovski sealed the win for Rangers with a deflected effort in the 85th minute.

The victory sees Rangers move above Hearts on goal difference, although the Jambos have a chance to regain top spot with a win over Livingston on Sunday.

Hibernian move within striking distance of fourth with kilmarnock thrashing

In Saturday's other key match, Hibernian capitalised on a fast start to defeat Kilmarnock 3-0 at Easter Road.

Owen Elding and Felix Passlack had Hibs 2-0 up inside 12 minutes, before substitute Ante Suto added a third in stoppage time.

The win moves Hibs within three points of Motherwell in the battle for fourth place, while Kilmarnock remain in the relegation playoff spot, three points adrift of both Aberdeen and St Mirren.
