Penguins stand pat in nhl free agency

The Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to have a quiet NHL free agency period after President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas emphasized the importance of avoiding costly signings.

Free agent landscape

The team's six unrestricted free agents, including forwards Kevin Hayes, Anthony Mantha, and Noel Acciari, as well as defensemen Ryan Shea and Connor Clifton, and goaltender Stuart Skinner, are not expected to return.

Meanwhile, the Penguins extended qualifying offers to seven restricted free agents: forwards Egor Chinakhov, David Gustafsson, Ville Koivu, Hendrix Lapierre, and Alex Alexeyev, and defensemen Joel Blomqvist and Arturs Silovs.

Notably, winger Vasily Ponomarev, who is playing in Russia, did not receive a qualifying offer.

Key re-signings

Before free agency opened, the Penguins re-upped with several key players. Center and alternate captain Evgeni Malkin signed a one-year, $5.5 million deal to return to Pittsburgh, while forward Connor Dewar inked a two-year, $2.25 million contract and defenseman Ilya Solovyov agreed to a one-year, $850,000 pact.

With Dubas's stated prioritization of strategic spending, the Penguins appear poised to focus on internal development and existing assets rather than making splashy free agent additions.
