Islanders rally late to defeat panthers 5-4 in thrilling contest

Matthew Schaefer's late goal propelled the New York Islanders to a 5-4 victory over the Florida Panthers on Sunday night, extending the Islanders' winning streak to five games and their points streak to eight in ten.

Down 4-3 with just 32 seconds remaining, the Islanders orchestrated a stunning comeback, fueled by a late surge from rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer. Schaefer, just 18 years old, scored his second goal of the game – a backhand-to-forehand maneuver – to tie the score before netting the game-winning goal.

The Panthers, the reigning Stanley Cup champions, initially took control of the game, building a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Sandis Vilmanis and Sam Bennett. However, the Islanders chipped away at the deficit, with Carson Soucy tying the game in the second period and Bo Horvat scoring to make it 3-3.

Florida’s Sam Bennett scored twice, and Sam Reinhart also contributed for the Panthers, who have now lost two straight. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 21 shots for the Panthers, but couldn't contain the Islanders' late push.

Schaefer’s performance is particularly noteworthy, bringing him within three goals of Brian Leetch's NHL rookie record for most goals scored by a defenseman. The Islanders also suffered a blow with Jonathan Drouin sidelined due to a lower-body injury.

The Islanders now embark on a four-game road trip, beginning with a game against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday. The Panthers will visit the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
