Guardians roar in home opener, delauter's heroics spark 4-1 victory

Cleveland Guardians celebrate their home opener with a decisive 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday, fueled by a stellar performance from rookie Chase DeLauter. The victory marks Cleveland's third consecutive home opener win, signaling a promising start to the season.

Delauter's seventh-inning heroics propel guardians to victory

DeLauter delivered a game-changing performance, going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the seventh inning and driving in three runs. His homer, a 402-foot blast off Hunter Harvey, extended the Guardians’ lead to three, tying him for the American League lead with five home runs this season – a feat last achieved by Trevor Story in 2016.

The Guardians took an early lead in the fifth inning when DeLauter singled to left, scoring Daniel Schneemann and tying the game at 1-1. Earlier, Gabriel Arias also homered in the seventh, giving Cleveland the lead.

The game wasn't without its early drama. Starting pitcher Cade Horton exited in the second inning due to right forearm discomfort after throwing just 17 pitches. Despite the early exit, the Guardians' pitching staff held the Cubs to just four runs.

Cade Smith secured the save, capping off a strong performance by the Guardians' pitching. The weather cooperated, with temperatures reaching 70 degrees – the warmest March or April opener for Cleveland since 1992.

The Cubs managed to score one run in the third inning thanks to an RBI hit from Miguel Amaya. Left-handed starter Shota Imanaga took the loss, now with a 0-1 record and a 7.20 ERA. The series resumes Saturday with Slade Cecconi starting for the Guardians against Imanaga.

DeLauter’s emergence as a power threat is a welcome development for the Guardians, adding excitement to a team hoping to contend this season.
