British Women's 4x100m Relay Claims Gold, Celebrating 'Fantastic Four'

Britain’s women’s 4x100m relay team secured a dominant victory at the European Athletics Championships, clocking 42.05 seconds – more than 10 meters ahead of Switzerland and Poland. The triumph was celebrated by team members, who highlighted the contributions of their fellow athletes.

A Team of Superwomen

Amy Hunt, who secured her third European gold medal in five days, praised the team as the “fantastic four,” emphasizing the individual strengths they bring to the relay. She specifically acknowledged Dina Asher-Smith, Britain’s most decorated European athlete, and Success Eduan, a 21-year-old midwifery student who brought a fresh perspective to the team.

Recognizing Individual Achievements

Hunt lauded Asher-Smith’s record-breaking medal tally and Eduan’s dedication to both her studies and her athletic pursuits. She also highlighted Imani-Lara Lansiquot’s strong baton handoff. Lansiquot, Hunt noted, is the author of a play, ‘Armour of Gaza,’ exploring her experiences growing up in Peckham.

Mixed Relay Ambitions and Relay Success

Hunt is aiming to become the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single European Championships in the mixed 4x100m relay this Sunday. Earlier in the evening, Britain’s men’s 4x100m relay team also secured gold, finishing in 38.45 seconds. The men's team comprised Jeremiah Azu, Louie Hinchliffe, Zharnel Hughes, and Romell Glave, beating out Germany and Belgium.

Notable Performances Beyond the Relays

Beyond the relays, the night saw outstanding performances. Italy’s Andy Diaz leaped to a stunning gold medal in the triple jump, achieving a personal best of 18.15m – the fourth longest jump in history, surpassing Pedro Richardo of Portugal by 39cm. Sweden’s Andreas Almgren also delivered a powerful performance in the men’s 10,000m.
