The lawsuit stems from a 2023 incident at Bondi Beach, where Amanda Ghost, a co-producer of MacInnes’ film, The Deb, suffered a medical episode. MacInnes recounts assisting Ghost back to a shared apartment and a subsequent, impromptu bath – a desperate attempt to regain warmth. During a particularly emotional testimony in the Federal Court, she described the Instagram post featuring the character Dory from Finding Nemo – “I suffer from short term memory loss… or do I?” – as a direct and pointed critique of her recollections.
Barrister’s sharp analysis: a calculated insult?
Barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC argued the post was a deliberate reference to MacInnes’ inconsistent responses regarding a four-year period of travel, arguing it was intended to cast doubt on the veracity of her entire account. “She was mocking the evidence I gave,” MacInnes stated, visibly distressed by the implication. The court heard Ghost’s supportive actions – including sharing an audition tape – were initially welcomed by MacInnes, but a subsequent distancing by Ghost after Wilson’s initial claims created a significant rift.
Wilson’s barrister, Dauid Sibtain SC, countered that the core issue isn’t whether a sexual harassment incident occurred, but rather whether MacInnes made a formal complaint and subsequently recanted it, doing so to advance her career. He highlighted the evidence suggesting MacInnes altered her narrative to secure a lead role and a recording contract. The legal battle is expected to continue for another two weeks, with Wilson and Agruma-Wilson slated to provide further testimony.
