Ofcom launches probe into telegram's handling of child abuse content

British telecoms regulator Ofcom has opened an investigation into whether messaging app Telegram is failing to prevent the spread of child sexual abuse material in the UK.

Concerns arise from alleged evidence

Ofcom conducted an initial assessment and decided to launch a full investigation after receiving evidence from the Canadian Centre for Child Protection suggesting the presence and sharing of such material on the platform.

The probe will examine whether Telegram is breaching UK Online Safety Act obligations to restrict and remove child abuse content, and whether the company has failed to meet its legal requirements.
