Franklin’s lightning rod: 250 years of climate warning
Two centuries and a quarter before scientists were sounding the alarm about a warming planet, Benjamin Franklin was already grappling with its potential consequences – and designing a solution.

Philadelphia’s legacy extends far beyond cheesesteaks and history. Recent research, meticulously pieced together over 250 years, reveals that the insights of America’s Founding Fathers continue to inform our understanding of a rapidly changing climate. At the heart of this connection lies a surprisingly simple, yet profoundly impactful invention housed within the Franklin Institute: the first known lightning rod.
“It was arguably the most monumental, if not the most impactful, invention of Benjamin Franklin,” explains Susannah Carroll, Director of Collections at the institute. “Its primary function was to prevent fires, a concern deeply personal to Franklin, given his co-founding of the city’s first volunteer fire company.” The rod, crafted in 1749, wasn’t simply a protective device; it represented a nascent awareness of the forces shaping the Earth’s environment.
Carroll recounts the rod’s resilience: “It was bent twice by lightning strikes – a testament to its effectiveness. It proved remarkably durable.” But Franklin’s vision went further. He laid the groundwork for modern meteorology, anticipating the need for systematic observation and data collection.
“We owe a considerable debt to those initial note-taking and weather observations,” says Grant Gilmore, a CBS Philadelphia meteorologist. “Looking at 2026 averages, we’re observing approximately 5 to 7 degrees warmer temperatures than what Franklin and his contemporaries were recording back in 1776. That’s a stark illustration of the accelerating trend.”
Scientists, like Jen Brady from Climate Central, corroborate this assessment. “The increase in severe weather events—the hailstorms, the lightning storms, the intensifying thunderstorms—is directly linked to these rising temperatures,” Brady states. “Early indications suggest we’ll experience even more frequent and intense lightning activity due to climate change.”
Carroll imagines Franklin’s reaction to the 21st-century crisis. “He was driven by a desire to solve problems for humanity,” she asserts. “His motivation was always to improve the world around him. It's a remarkably prescient sentiment, considering the magnitude of the challenge we now face.” The echoes of Franklin’s ingenuity resonate even today, serving as a potent reminder that some of our most critical insights emerge from the most unexpected corners of history.
