Now, a convergence of Western Science and traditional ecological knowledge is revealing the astonishing resilience of these ancient structures and offering a blueprint for coastal restoration in a rapidly changing world.
A marine ecologist's unexpected revelation
Marco Hatch, a marine ecologist at Western Washington University and a member of the Samish Indian Nation, describes his work with a wry self-deprecation: “I’m a glorified clam counter.” But Hatch’s surveys, conducted in collaboration with seven Indigenous communities, are far more than mere enumeration. They represent a profound reconciliation of scientific rigor and ancestral wisdom, documenting the health of mollusk populations within and around these rock-walled, terraced beaches.
These clam gardens, once painstakingly constructed and maintained by Indigenous peoples, are seeing a remarkable revival. Hatch’s data isn't just about clam counts; it’s vital for securing the permits needed to rebuild and maintain these structures, empowering these nations to assert control over their heritage and reclaim food sovereignty—a stark contrast to the environmental devastation wrought by mining in the region.

The paradigm shift: embracing indigenous knowledge
The story isn't just about restoring clam gardens; it’s about a fundamental shift in how Western scientists view Indigenous knowledge. For too long, traditional practices were dismissed as “mythic” or “religious,” while scientific methodologies were held up as the sole standard of rigor. While Western Science often compartmentalizes knowledge into distinct disciplines – ecology, biology, geology – Indigenous perspectives recognize the interconnectedness of all things. “The earth and the water and the air and the plants and the animals are deeply interdependent,” explains Supernant. “To understand one is to understand all.” This holistic view offers invaluable insights for Western scientists grappling with complex environmental challenges.
Furthermore, Western Science can provide crucial support, helping Indigenous communities address specific concerns, such as declining fish populations or reduced plant productivity. Suzanne Greenlaw, an ecologist at the Schoodic Institute, faced this challenge while studying sweet grass, a vital resource for Wabanaki basketry. A 2016 study, designed to understand how sweet grass rebounds after harvesting, ultimately validated traditional Wabanaki harvesting practices and paved the way for reclaiming harvest rights within Acadia National Park.
The future of coastal management may well depend on embracing this collaborative spirit. The Simon Fraser University’s findings on Indigenous-managed forest gardens, demonstrating increased biodiversity and improved forest health, offer a compelling glimpse of what’s possible when traditional knowledge and Western Science converge. As Kyle Whyte, a professor of environmental justice at the University of Michigan, aptly puts it, “If there was more collaboration, we could not only save money, but we could stand on the shoulders of Indigenous people and start doing more advanced studies about the ecosystem.”
