Santa monica man charged with rapes, kidnapping

A 26-year-old man from Santa Monica, California, has been charged with multiple counts of rape, kidnapping and robbery following a series of alleged attacks in Los Angeles County.

Alleged crimes span two years, including 2025 assault in culver city

According to a news release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Alexander William Schecter faces charges related to the kidnapping and sexual assault of a University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) student in March, as well as an alleged rape that took place in Culver City in October 2025.

Schecter, who was initially arrested in March after being identified as the suspect who picked up a female student in the 500 block of Landfair Avenue, refused to let her out of his vehicle and threatened violence before driving to a different location about half a mile away.

He was later released after posting bail but was rearrested two weeks later when evidence linked him to the October 2025 rape, which police say occurred near Venice Boulevard and Clarington Avenue at 3:15 a.m.

Prosecutors are seeking to increase Schecter's bail from $70,000 to $140,000. If convicted as charged, he faces 37 years to life in state prison.
