Church break-ins plague warren: suspect on bike remains at large
A wave of coordinated break-ins targeting churches across Warren’s south side has law enforcement scrambling for answers and residents on edge. Since Easter, five distinct places of worship – Mt. Calvary Lutheran, Warren Missionary Baptist, and several others – have been hit by a suspect operating with chilling efficiency.
A shadowy figure on two wheels
The Warren Police Department describes the perpetrator as a Black male, estimated to be in his mid-30s, standing between 5’8” and 6 feet tall. Witnesses consistently report him clad in dark clothing and riding a distinctive BMX-style bicycle, characterized by silver fenders. Lt. John Gajewski stated, “It’s unusual. Something we don’t see very often.”
Evidence points to a calculated operation
Surveillance footage, meticulously analyzed by detectives, paints a clear picture: a lone male on a bike, swiftly entering the premises, executing the break-in, and then disappearing into the night. The suspect appears to be deliberately avoiding detection. CBS Detroit reports that no items of value have been stolen in any of the incidents, though significant damage – shattered stained-glass windows at Mt. Calvary, ransacked interiors at Warren Missionary – suggests a disturbing pattern beyond simple theft.
Pastor’s fear, community shock
Shannon Kemp, the pastor’s wife at Warren Missionary Baptist, recounted the second break-in, describing a scene of utter chaos. “Everything was all over the place. It was a mess,” she said, visibly shaken. “We’re fearful that they might come back. We’ll probably be a little bit better prepared.” Thomas Essenmacher, vice president of Mt. Calvary Lutheran, expressed a profound sense of disbelief. “Shocked. There wasn’t a lot of words to put to it because it seems very senseless.”
A motive remains elusive
Despite an intensive investigation, the suspect’s motive remains shrouded in mystery. Gajewski admitted to CBS News Detroit that the lack of stolen goods raises serious questions. “You wonder what motive somebody has for breaking into a church, especially in light of Temple Israel and other things going on in the world.” The department is urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the need for vigilance within the community.
