Stockbridge renames lee street to honor mlk
Stockbridge, Georgia, has stirred controversy by renaming Lee Street in honor of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. The city council's decision, officials say, reflects the area's strong connection to King's family. However, local resident Joyce Andrews vehemently disagrees, claiming the street's original name is rooted in her family's history.

Lee street's name debated
Andrews asserts that three Lee brothers built homes along the street in the early 1900s, with one still standing today. She also argues that a common misconception has fueled the name change debate - Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, never had anything to do with the naming of Lee Street in Stockbridge.
Contrary to this, local historian Gene Morris maintains that the street was actually named after longtime Stockbridge mayor R. E. Lee, who played a key role in bringing paved roads and electricity to the city. Despite the dispute, city leaders are pushing forward with the name change to pay tribute to the King family's ties to the community.
