A man was shot and wounded by police in Morningside Heights on Friday evening, according to the New York City Police Department.

Police were dispatched to the intersection of 125th Street and Amsterdam Avenue just before 6:30 pm after receiving a 911 call about gunfire in the area.

When officers arrived, they encountered a male suspect who allegedly fired shots at them. In response, police opened fire, striking the man in the torso, the NYPD said.

The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive his injuries. Multiple bullet holes were visible in the window of a nearby urgent care center.

The scene remained cordoned off for several hours as detectives investigated the shooting. No further details have been released by authorities.
