Benjamin Netanyahu's bid for another term as Israel's prime minister faces a major challenge as two of his most formidable political rivals, Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid, have announced a merger of their parties to run against him in the election expected later this year.

Bennett, a right-wing leader, and Lapid, a centrist, issued statements Sunday announcing the merger of their parties, Bennett 2026 and Yesh Atid (There is a Future). They promised to work together to
