Minnesota republicans plan ethics complaint against democrat over environmental ties

Minnesota House Republicans announced Monday they intend to file an ethics complaint against Democratic lawmaker Alex Falconer, citing his ties to environmental lobbying groups as 'ethically questionable.'

According to the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board, Falconer registered as a lobbyist for Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness between March 5, 2024, and December 31, 2024. He also serves as federal government relations manager for Save the Boundary Waters. Falconer's legislative bio lists his occupation as 'nonprofit manager,' a designation Republicans claim obscures his actual role.

House Republicans, led by Rep. Isaac Schultz, accused Falconer of being 'effectively a legislator lobbyist.' They point to the fact that Falconer has authored bills supported by the environmental groups he lobbies for. 'This is a clear conflict of interest,' Schultz stated. 'We can't have lawmakers using their position to enrich special interests.'

In response, Falconer's office has not commented on the pending ethics complaint. Meanwhile, House democrats plan to file ethics complaints against Republican Reps. Elliott Engen and Walter Hudson. Engen faces a DWI charge stemming from a March 27 arrest, while Hudson has been accused of inappropriate conduct.

As the political maneuvering escalates, the controversy surrounding Falconer's dual roles highlights the delicate balance between public service and private advocacy. The outcome of these ethics complaints could set a precedent for future lawmakers navigating similar situations.
