The event, described by critics as an ‘oligarch’s dinner,’ transpired just weeks before Trump’s appearance at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner and as the Justice Department and European regulators continue to weigh Paramount’s proposed $110 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. The optics are undeniably troubling, particularly given Representative Jamie Raskin’s pointed characterization of the affair: ‘a lavish oligarch’s dinner for Donald Trump.’
Raskin, a vocal opponent of the Ellison ownership of CBS News, argued the merger is “crafted to consolidate old and new media in the interests of the Maga movement and the Donald Trump family,” a move he framed as a blatant attempt to solidify political influence. Becca Balint, a Vermont lawmaker and antitrust subcommittee member, added a chilling observation: ‘Think about that for a moment. Think about that.
