Elk grove unveils surveillance camera program to combat crime

Elk Grove's city council has approved a new surveillance camera initiative to enhance public safety and crime deterrence. The program enables real-time monitoring of criminal activity, allowing police to swiftly respond to incidents and make arrests.

Cameras to be installed across the city

Under the program, local businesses can apply for up to $5,000 in financial incentives to purchase new exterior surveillance cameras. Participating properties include the Elk Grove Auto Mall, Sun Grove Church, and the Ridge shopping center.

City officials claim the initiative has already led to a notable reduction in crime response times and the apprehension of more suspects. The $75,000 program is funded by the Measure E sales tax increase approved by voters in 2022.

Despite concerns around privacy and surveillance, the city maintains that the program is voluntary and businesses control what footage is shared with police. The cameras are seen as a crime-fighting tool rather than a means of tracking individuals.
