North Adelaide Council Considers Lowering Speed Limits

The Adelaide City Council is considering lowering the speed limit on O’Connell Street and Melbourne Street in North Adelaide to 40 kilometers per hour, following a petition from residents concerned about safety.

Safety Concerns Drive Proposal

North Ward councillor Phillip Martin introduced the motion, citing pressure from residents who want to reduce the risk of collisions and lower noise levels. He highlighted that pedestrians face a significantly higher risk of serious injury or death at 50 km/h compared to 40 km/h, according to the National Road Safety Strategy.

Part of Larger Revitalization Project

The proposed speed reduction is part of the $25 million O’Connell Street Revitalization Project, which aims to improve public safety and accessibility across five main streets in the area. Approximately 34,000 vehicles travel along O’Connell Street daily.

Local Residents Support Change

Several local residents support the initiative. Michael Elmerhev, manager of St Georges Bakehouse, noted customer complaints about speeding traffic and noise. Kelley Durham shared a near-miss experience and emphasized the need for reduced speed limits, particularly for children walking to school. Simon Heuzenroeder expressed a desire for a more cautious approach from authorities.

Next Steps

Councillor Martin is expected to present the motion at tomorrow’s council meeting. If approved, the council will consult with the transport department for approval of the speed limit changes. The council has also announced plans to reduce the speed limit on Melbourne Street to 40 km/h in the coming weeks.
