Sacramento's channel 24 thrives as festival dreams fade

While larger Sacramento Music festivals grapple with cancellations and postponements, a new venue, Channel 24, is quietly building a devoted following – and proving that a focused, community-driven model can flourish even amidst rising costs.

A niche perfectly occupied

Just months after opening its doors, Channel 24, operated by Another Planet Entertainment, is celebrating its first anniversary with a sense of quiet triumph. The venue, boasting a capacity of 2,000 to 3,000, has hosted roughly 80 shows, nearly half drawing sell-out crowds. General Manager Jon Gunton attributes this early success to a combination of factors: the venue’s size, a strategic location filling a demonstrable need, and a deep connection with the Sacramento community.

The need, it turns out, was identified by a 2023 city study that surveyed 1,400 industry professionals. The results unequivocally pointed to a shortage of mid-sized live Music venues, a gap Channel 24 appears to have stepped into with remarkable precision. “We sort of occupy perfectly a space where there's a lot of bands playing in a 2,000- 3,000 person venue,” Gunton explained, highlighting the venue's differentiation within the local Music scene.

Beyond the headlines: community as currency

The recent struggles of established festivals like Sol Blume, Goldensky, and Breakaway—all citing escalating costs and logistical hurdles—cast a long shadow over Sacramento’s live Music landscape. Yet, Channel 24’s resilience suggests a different path. The venue’s leadership credits its success not just to strategic planning, but to a genuine partnership with Sacramento residents. “Sacramento wanted a place like this,” Gunton stated, “and that feeling of us wanting to be a part of Sacramento, it was a sort of mutual affection and do something together.”

This sentiment extends to acknowledging the patience of neighbors during the venue’s construction phase. Channel 24’s commitment to a diverse range of genres, including a planned comedy show next week, further underscores its dedication to serving the city’s eclectic tastes. The venue's trajectory offers a compelling case study: sometimes, the most sustainable growth isn’t about chasing mega-events, but about cultivating a loyal local audience.
