a fleeting glimpse: sandhill cranes overhead
An unexpected interruption
While deeply engrossed in re-reading The Hobbit beneath an old oak tree, I was lost in a whimsical daydream. The scene felt remarkably like the Shire, with a gopher tortoise hole resembling a hobbit hole. I imagined hooded dwarves emerging from the woods, when a peculiar whining sound shattered the tranquility. Initially fearing a downed power line, a UFO, or even a tornado, my attention was quickly redirected. It turned out to be my dogs – Sweetie Pie, Cutie Pie, Barney, and Gumbo – unusually focused on the sky.
The dogs' unusual behavior
My dogs' upward gaze was concerning; they rarely looked skyward. Their whining, unlike their typical ground-sniffing, sparked a moment of alarm. The sudden shift in their behavior suggested something significant was approaching. It was a moment of heightened awareness, a break from the comfort of my literary world and a return to a more grounded sense of observation and potential danger. The unusual focus of my canine companions was the first clue to the spectacle about to unfold.
A flock of migrating sandhill cranes
What we all witnessed was a breathtaking aerial display by a flock of migrating Sandhill Cranes. They wheeled gracefully overhead, seemingly evaluating our farm as a potential safe haven for the evening. Their movements were effortless and serene against the clear winter blue sky. The sheer size and elegance of these birds were captivating, a truly remarkable sight to behold. The experience transcended a simple observation; it was a moment of awe.
Observing the cranes' graceful flight
These long-necked, gamine-legged beauties sailed on the wind with an incredible grace and magnificence. Their enormous, oar-like wings appeared motionless as they dipped and soared, surveying the terrain below. The scene was almost ethereal, as if they were floating on the breath of God. I was struck by the whitely serene presence of the cranes, a moment of quiet beauty in an otherwise hectic world. Their flight was a masterclass in avian navigation and effortless movement.
A brief but powerful encounter
The mesmerizing display lasted only a few minutes. Suddenly, they vanished, disappearing as quickly as they arrived – like a fleeting daydream. The entire encounter left a lasting impression, a reminder to look up and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. It was a welcome distraction from troubling news, a moment of unexpected joy and wonder. The fleeting nature of the encounter only amplified its impact.
Finding hope and perspective
The sight of the Sandhill Cranes served as a potent reminder to seek revelation and truth not in the mundane details of daily life, but in the vastness of the sky. It’s an encouragement to look beyond the immediate struggles and connect with something larger than ourselves. Like the cranes, driven by a determined quest and mounting in faith, we too can move forward and find what we need. The message they carried was one of hope, resilience, and the enduring value of life, observed on December 17, 2012 in Gainesville, FL.
