Hooters staff deliver comfort, dignity in chicagoland donation drive
Forget the tired stereotypes; a recent initiative from Hooters restaurants across the Chicago area demonstrates a surprising commitment to community support. A collection drive culminated Monday, March 30th, yielding 72 purses packed with essential hygiene items for women facing domestic violence and hardship—a tangible expression of empathy extending beyond the usual narrative.

A growing partnership: love purse and hmc hospitality group
The effort, orchestrated by HMC Hospitality Group, the parent company for many Chicagoland Hooters locations, partnered with Love Purse, a Riverside, Illinois-based nonprofit founded by Maria Castro. Castro’s organization focuses on collecting purses—ideally costing under $20—and filling them with necessities like feminine hygiene products, deodorant, soap, lotion, hand sanitizer, dental and hair care items, slippers, socks, compact mirrors, and even small treats like chocolates and mints. Each purse also includes a handwritten inspirational note, a small gesture that speaks volumes about the intention behind the drive.
What’s particularly noteworthy is the escalating scale of this collaboration. Nicole Sancen, general manager at the Joliet Hooters, spearheaded the partnership in 2022, resulting in 37 purses collected solely from that location. Those purses were then distributed to organizations directly supporting victims of domestic abuse. The current drive, encompassing eight locations—including those in River North, O'Hare, Aurora, Downers Grove, Joliet, Oak Lawn, Schaumburg, and Cicero—represents a significant expansion of this commitment.
The purses themselves are destined for Metropolitan Family Services and WINGS Program Inc., both established organizations providing critical support to domestic violence survivors and women in need. Denise Williams, chief marketing officer for HMC Hospitality Group, described the event as “amazing,” emphasizing the desire to “help local women feel special and loved.” The choice of a purse, rather than simply donating items, is a clever detail – a purse can represent a sense of agency and dignity, offering a small piece of normalcy amidst difficult circumstances.
The sheer volume of donations—72 purses—is a testament to the collective effort, demonstrating that even seemingly unconventional businesses can contribute meaningfully to social causes. It’s a reminder that compassion can manifest in unexpected places, and that addressing critical needs within a community requires a multifaceted approach.
