“It’s loud. As bad as 12 and 1 in the morning, you’ll see six, seven, eight of them coming by,” says Bill Dewey, a Berlin resident. The disturbances are particularly troubling for those in the New Freedom Village, a 55+ community, and the Enclave neighborhood.

Chief Michael Scheer of the Berlin Police Department confirmed the escalating problem, stating that they’ve received dozens of complaints in recent weeks. Riders are navigating residential streets, damaging property and posing a risk to pedestrians.

The impact extends beyond mere annoyance. Residents report windows rattling from the noise and a palpable sense of disruption to their lives. “Just not a care in the world, just ripping through the backyard, going through neighborhoods, it’s out of control at this point,” Scheer stated.

While state regulations prevent officers from pursuing the riders for safety reasons, the police are deploying resources. The department is utilizing AI technology, drones, and facial recognition software in an effort to identify and prosecute those responsible. “There are specific locations where they can take those vehicles off into the woods, not through residential areas. It’s not going to be tolerated,” Scheer emphasized. Increased patrols are underway, and the police are urging neighbors to submit any video or information.
