Washington man arrested 28 years after wife's mysterious death

A 68-year-old man has been arrested in Washington state for the first-degree murder of his estranged wife, nearly three decades after her body was found in their home.

James robert randle was taken into custody at a nursing home where he lived, according to the pierce county sheriff's office.

Randle's wife, Janice, was discovered dead in bed in November 1992, with their 2-year-old daughter Katie in a nearby crib. Initially, police suspected an overdose, given Randle's claim that Janice had a History of painkiller use during their divorce.

However, autopsy results revealed no drugs in Janice's system, prompting a homicide investigation that stalled for decades due to a lack of concrete evidence.

It wasn't until family members came forward with new information, including eyewitness accounts of Randle confessing to the crime, that investigators were able to reopen the case and establish probable cause for his arrest.
