Minnesota Woman Seeks Kidney Donor Amidst End-Stage Renal Disease and Diabetes

A 34-year-old woman from Alexandria, Minnesota, is urgently seeking a kidney donor to combat end-stage renal disease and long-standing diabetes.

Laura Bachmeier’s Urgent Plea

Laura Bachmeier, who works in the agriculture supply chain, was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease last winter, with her kidneys operating at less than 10% functionality. She’s currently undergoing dialysis seven days a week.

“It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster,” Bachmeier stated. “I’ve had diabetes for over 30 years, and this adds a whole other layer to it.”

She requires a perfect organ match with Type O blood and a matching tissue type, as well as a pancreas to address her diabetes complications, which sometimes manifest with fluctuating blood sugar levels.

“Sometimes if my blood sugar is low, is it because of my diabetes or is it [because] I’m not feeling good because of my dialysis?” she explained.

Bachmeier is awaiting a call regarding a potential match and would need to travel from Alexandria to the Twin Cities within hours.

“I’m very optimistic,” she said, acknowledging challenging times, including concerns about becoming a burden on her family.
