Measles suspected in washtenaw county; exposure sites identified

A second suspected case of measles has emerged in Washtenaw County, Michigan, prompting a Healthinvestigation and raising concerns about potential outbreaks. The individual, a close contact of a previously reported case, is unvaccinated, according to the Washtenaw County Health Department.

Health officials urge vaccination after new measles case

The department announced Friday that two additional locations have been added to the list of possible exposure sites: Crunch Fitness in Ypsilanti (March 4, 5:00-8:40 p.m.) and Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor (March 5, 3:00-6:30 p.m.).

Measles is highly contagious, capable of remaining airborne for up to two hours. Dr. Juan Luis Marquez, medical director of the Washtenaw County Health Department, stressed the urgency of vaccination, particularly for those who haven't been immunized against the disease. “Unfortunately, we expect to see additional cases in exposed, unvaccinated individuals,” he stated.

The investigation is a collaborative effort involving the Washtenaw, Wayne, and Michigan Departments of Health and Human Services. The Health department is actively monitoring the situation and encouraging residents to remain vigilant. The situation underscores the fragility of herd immunity and the continuing need for preventative measures.
