Police identified the man as Tony, and confirmed he disappeared around 12:30 pm on Saturday on Cordillo Downs Road, near Innamincka, a small settlement more than 1,000km north of Adelaide. The search, involving aerial support, water operations officers, local police, and State Emergency Service (SES) personnel, was hampered by the continued flooding of the Cooper Creek, described by the CSIRO as “among the most complex floodplains in Australia.”
The Cooper Creek floodplain, a vital part of one of the world’s last major free-flowing desert river systems, regularly experiences inundation, but the current scale is exceptional.
