North texas church offers free prom dresses to students

Prom season in North Texas brings excitement – and expense – for many high school students. But for 17 years, St. Andrew's Methodist Church has stepped in to alleviate the financial strain, offering free prom dresses and accessories to young women. This year, organizers aim to serve 1,400 students.

A chance to shine, debt-free

The initiative functions like a boutique, with students able to browse 5,000 dresses in various styles and sizes. “I’m feeling very excited, very happy,” said Gabrielle Bennett, a high school junior. “It’s all like coming to me at once.”

The experience is designed to be special, allowing students to find the perfect fit and accessories – shoes, bags, and more – all donated. “I had one yesterday that walked into our dress area, and she stopped and just said, ‘wow,’” recounts Kathy Moore, Prom Closet chairman. “That moment, that’s why we do it.”

Community donations and a dedicated team of volunteers make the program possible. The Prom Closet is open until March 7, by appointment only. The emotional impact is palpable. “I want to thank this whole organization, I’m very grateful,” Bennett added. The generosity extends beyond clothing; it offers a reprieve from financial worries, allowing students to focus on celebrating a milestone.
