Christopher kane revives mulberry: a fashion house rises
British designer Christopher Kane is set to breathe new life into heritage brand Mulberry, becoming its new creative director. The appointment, announced today, marks a pivotal moment for the luxury house, which has faced financial headwinds in recent years.

Kane to relaunch mulberry's ready-to-wear line
The Glaswegian designer’s debut collection is slated for unveiling next September at London Fashion Week, with retail availability following in January 2027. The news has been met with widespread enthusiasm within the British Fashioncommunity, with Vogue reporting audible celebrations across London.
Mulberry, traditionally known for its leather goods, particularly the iconic Alexa handbag launched in 2010, has struggled to maintain its prominence. The brand laid off approximately 85 employees globally in 2024 and resisted a takeover bid from Frasers Group.
Kane, a celebrated figure known for his playful designs and provocative references – often drawing inspiration from sources like Frankenstein and 1970s erotic literature – returns to the helm after closing his eponymous label in 2020. He previously collaborated with Self-Portrait in 2024.
His CV boasts a history of influential work, including a stint with Donatella Versace and collections for Topshop. Kane has earned accolades such as the Vogue Fashion Fund and four British Fashion Awards, including Womenswear Designer of the Year.
Andrea Baldo, Mulberry's CEO, emphasized Kane's unique blend of creativity, technical skill, and appreciation for craftsmanship. “Christopher brings a rare combination of creativity, intellectual rigour and instinctive playfulness, alongside a deep respect for craft and materials,” Baldo stated.
The appointment comes after a series of creative directors at Mulberry, including Emma Hill, Stuart Vevers (now at Coach), and Jonny Coca, each with varying degrees of success. The brand's resurgence hinges on Kane’s ability to tap into a renewed sense of British creativity and consumer desire for distinctive luxury.
The Alexa bag, designed for Alexa Chung, remains a cultural touchstone of the 2000s, alongside the Bayswater, favored by figures like Kate Moss and Jennifer Lopez. Mulberry's future success will be inextricably linked to Kane's vision for the brand – a vision that, judging by early reactions, is brimming with potential.
