Detroit nonprofit champions autism inclusion with immersive weekend

A Metro Detroit nonprofit is spearheading a community-wide push for autism awareness and inclusion with two key events this weekend.

Autism in the D will kick off Saturday with an innovative, hands-on sensory experience at Chandler Park Field House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event preview's the nonprofit's ambitious plan to launch Detroit's first adaptive and inclusive sensory play gym, a desperately needed resource for local families.

On Sunday, Autism in the D will host its sixth annual Detroit Autism Walk at the Detroit Medical Center's (DMC) Brush Mall, spanning a symbolic 1.31 miles to represent the one in 31 children diagnosed with autism.

Through these events, Autism in the D aims to not only build a supportive community but also draw attention to glaring disparities in access to autism services within Detroit. According to founder Tiera Moultire, the city sorely lacks essential resources, including just two ABA therapy centers.

Registration remains open for both events as Autism in the D continues fundraising efforts to bring its inclusive sensory play space to life.
