Chicago Teenager Killed in E-Scooter Collision with Semi-Truck

A Chicago family is mourning the loss of Alex Blacio, a 16-year-old killed Monday afternoon in the North Center neighborhood after a collision with a Freightliner semi-truck while riding an electric scooter. Police are investigating the incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Western Avenue near Belle Avenue.

The Collision and Immediate Aftermath

According to police, Blacio lost control of his e-scooter while traveling north on Western Avenue and was struck by the semi-truck, also heading north. Michael Manrique, a witness to the aftermath, stated he saw the scooter and the young man on the ground. He called 911 and attempted to comfort Blacio.

Family's Grief and Remembrance

Blacio was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His mother, Maria Mizhqiri, expressed her devastation in Spanish, stating she “still cannot accept that my little one is no longer with me.” The family gathered Wednesday at a memorial near the site of the incident to remember Blacio, whose birthday was August 25th and who was set to begin his senior year at Lakeview High School this fall. His sister, Andrea, described him as having “one of the nicest, kindest souls that could ever exist.”

Concerns About Road Safety

Blacio was reportedly riding home from work at the time of the collision. His family noted the lack of dedicated infrastructure for scooters or bikes on Western Avenue. “There is no bike lane on this street. It’s a very dangerous street,” Andrea stated. The family has been overwhelmed by community support, including a GoFundMe campaign and a vigil held Tuesday night.

Ongoing Investigation and Vigil

The family is holding another prayer vigil Wednesday night and for several nights following. Police have indicated that citations are pending, and the investigation into Blacio's death remains open.
