These endearing creatures, already facing a significant population decline, often curl into a ball when threatened, rendering them virtually invisible to the sensors of automated mowers. Claudia Kalisch, Vice President of the German Federation of Cities and Mayor of Lüneburg, points to a crucial shift: “Cities have become substitute habitats for many mammals as development and intensive agriculture shrink their natural territories.” This, she argues, makes a nighttime ban a logical and necessary protective measure.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that hedgehogs, now classified as “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature following a 30% population drop in the last decade, are increasingly reliant on gardens within urban areas. Beyond robot lawnmowers, the Federation also notes the harm caused by motorized leaf blowers and vacuums, particularly to hibernating hedgehogs. A staggering one in three hedgehogs are tragically killed by vehicles, contributing significantly to their decline across Europe.

But there's a glimmer of hope. Researchers at the University of Oxford, collaborating with Danish colleagues, recently revealed that hedgehogs can hear high-frequency ultrasound. This discovery fuels optimism regarding the potential use of sonic repellents to deter them from dangerous roads.
