Record heatwave shatters pittsburgh history, easter dampening
Saturday’s temperatures in Pittsburgh weren’t just warm; they were astonishing, rewriting local weather records stretching back over a century. The city sizzled at a high of 83°F, a figure last reached in 1882 – a testament to the unusual nature of this early April heat.
Unexpected warmth extends across the region
The record-tying heat wasn’t confined to Pittsburgh. Morgantown reached a scorching 85°F, eclipsing the 1921 mark of 84 degrees. Wheeling saw 83°F, beating its previous record of 81°F set in 1921, and also secured a new high-low temperature record of 60 degrees, a significant jump from the 55 degrees recorded in 1999. Even Dubois felt the heat, hitting 79°F, a full 4 degrees above the 1981 record.
But the unusual weather pattern wasn't just about the highs. The city also experienced a record-breaking low temperature of 60°F on Saturday, pushing past the previous record of 59°F established in 1928. The sheer scale of these simultaneous extremes underscores a shifting climate dynamic, demanding closer observation.

Easter weekend: rain and cooler temperatures ahead
The fleeting warmth will be a stark memory as Easter Sunday approaches. While the heaviest rain has already passed, drizzle and light showers are anticipated just before sunset. Skies will remain overcast, and the dampness will likely affect outdoor celebrations, including the traditional Easter egg hunts. The region has already accumulated over two inches of rainfall since the beginning of the month, adding to the already saturated ground.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to plummet, with mornings this week potentially dipping into the 20s. Tuesday will be particularly frigid, with highs struggling to reach the low 40s. A gradual warming trend is projected for the remainder of the week, with highs reaching the 70s by Friday and Saturday, and a potential climb to near 80°F by Sunday. The rapid temperature fluctuations highlight the volatility of the current weather system and the challenges it presents for planning outdoor activities.
