Meteorological data reveals that over 61% of the Lower 48 states are experiencing moderate to exceptional drought – a staggering 97% of the Southeast and two-thirds of the West. This is the highest level of drought severity for this time of year since the Drought Monitor began tracking conditions in 2000. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Palmer Drought Severity Index also indicates a critical situation, hitting its highest level since 1895, with last month ranking as the third-driest on record, trailing only the devastating Dust Bowl months of July and August 1934.

The early onset of this drought, fueled by record heat and a drastically reduced snowpack in the West, is particularly concerning. Regions like New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah are grappling with historically low snowpack – a crucial water reservoir – leaving them vulnerable to wildfires and water shortages in the coming months. Experts warn that the confluence of these factors could lead to a cascade of negative consequences.

Adding to the urgency, UCLA hydroclimatologist Park Williams has identified a worrying trend: the atmosphere is behaving like an unusually absorbent sponge. Vapor pressure deficit, a technical measurement of how much moisture the air is extracting from the ground, is 77% above normal – a record high for January through March. This level of moisture extraction, unprecedented in recent history, wouldn’t have been conceivable without the influence of climate change. Normally, drought peaks in summer, but this spring’s conditions are setting a dangerous precedent.

A separate, yet interconnected, drought linked to the jet stream’s positioning is impacting the South, from Texas to the East Coast. Brian Fuchs, a climatologist with the National Drought Mitigation Center, explains that the situation is exacerbated by a persistent pattern of storms staying further north than usual. NOAA estimates that nearly 19 inches of rain would be required in a single month to break the drought in eastern Texas, and over a foot of rain is needed to alleviate the deficit across much of the Southeast.

The potential for widespread water shortages and a surge in wildfire activity is undeniable. As Kathy Jacobs, director of the Center for Climate Adaptation Science and Solutions at the University of Arizona, aptly stated, “Those of us who are dependent on the Colorado River are deeply concerned about the lack of a negotiated path forward, especially given what appears to be the worst year of drought on record.”
