Maila cyclone strengthens, heads south towards queensland

A severe tropical cyclone is barreling towards Australia's northeastern coast, posing a significant threat to the state of Queensland. Cyclone Maila, currently churning in the Solomon Sea, has intensified to become the strongest storm recorded this far north, with peak gusts reaching 160mph.

Devastation in the solomon islands

The storm has already wrought havoc across the Solomon Islands, particularly in Western, Choiseul and Isabel provinces. Widespread damage has been reported to schools, clinics and homes, displacing around 120 people and affecting nearly 73,000 overall.

The Solomon Islands government is prioritizing humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of the cyclone's destruction.

Maila's forecast path

Maila is expected to make landfall in Papua New Guinea over the weekend, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to the country's southeastern regions. From Sunday, the cyclone is forecast to continue moving southwestwards, likely making landfall on Australia's north Queensland coast early next week.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology warns that the cyclone's impact could be severe, with potential for significant damage and disruption.
