Cyclone maila bears down on queensland, threatening repeat devastation

A potent tropical cyclone is barreling toward the Queensland coast, mere weeks after the region was pummeled by Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle.

Maila, currently a category 3 storm, is predicted to make landfall on the weekend, potentially bringing sustained winds of up to 160 km/h and heavy rainfall.

While forecasters believe the cyclone's most likely path will see it cross Cape York at the weekend, there's still significant uncertainty around its ultimate trajectory and strength.

Appearing out of the Solomon Sea, Maila is expected to intensify to category 4 before weakening again. The warm waters that fueled Narelle's fury are also feeding this new cyclone.
