A heated debate erupted at Monday's Evanston-Skokie School District 65 board meeting as parents and educators pleaded with the district not to ax its struggling after-school childcare program.

Subsidized program faces budget cuts

The district is seeking ways to slash a $6 million deficit, and the School Age Child Care (SACC) program - which runs at a loss of over $500,000 annually - is squarely in the crosshairs.

Natalie Copper, the union president of the Evanston Association of Childcare Professionals, implored the board to consider the human impact of such cuts.
