Fourth graders cool denver school with ingenious fan plan
Park Hill Elementary School in Denver is experiencing a surprisingly effective solution to summer heat – thanks to the initiative of its fourth-grade Sustainability Club. Faced with classrooms regularly hitting 80 degrees, these students didn't wait for the promised air conditioning installation; they proactively sought a quicker, more sustainable fix, demonstrating a level of civic engagement rarely seen in elementary schoolers.
A wave of relief for park hill students
The problem was palpable. “It was really, really hot on the third floor, and it was really hard for students to learn,” explained Chloe Prom, a member of the Sustainability Club. The stifling heat, averaging a sweltering 80 degrees during the summer months, made concentration nearly impossible. The school, buoyed by a 2024 voter-approved bond, is slated to receive air conditioning units over the summer, a welcome prospect but one that wouldn’t immediately address the immediate discomfort.
But the Sustainability Club, recognizing the urgency, took matters into their own hands. Their solution? Ceiling fans. And not just any ceiling fans – energy-efficient models secured through a nearly $20,000 grant from the city’s climate protection fund. Over spring break, the club spearheaded the installation of these fans in ten of the school's most affected classrooms.
The impact has been immediate. According to Kelly Moses, a program manager for DPS’s sustainability efforts, the fans, utilizing a mere 35 watts at their highest setting – “only about one light bulb of energy,” as Potts, another club member, pointed out – are already making a significant difference. The students, demonstrating impressive foresight, even conducted pre- and post-installation surveys, gathering data to quantify the fans’ effectiveness. “The students were surveying before they’re going to survey after, for the folks in those classrooms to say, like, did it work? Did it do well?” Moses explained.
What’s particularly noteworthy is the long-term efficiency this strategy affords. Even after the air conditioning units are installed, Moses anticipates the fans will allow for a reduction in AC usage, creating a more sustainable and cost-effective climate control system. “The ceiling fans.won't have to turn it up as high thanks to the fans, making it a long-term, energy-efficient solution,” she stated. The students' proactive approach serves as a model for other schools grappling with similar challenges, proving that even small-scale initiatives can yield substantial results.
Tegan Williamson, another member of the Sustainability Club, succinctly captured the sentiment: “Our hard work had a big impact on the school and other kids' learning.” The students' ingenuity and dedication have not only improved the learning environment at Park Hill Elementary but have also demonstrated the power of youthful initiative in addressing pressing environmental and educational concerns. It’s a testament to the idea that sometimes, the best solutions come from those closest to the problem.
