E-bike ban looms for newport-mesa students, sparking safety debate

Newport-Mesa Unified School District is considering a proposal to prohibit students from riding e-bikes, a move that has ignited a debate about safety, responsibility, and the evolving landscape of student transportation.

District considers e-bike ban amid accident concerns

The potential ban, slated to affect all students except those in high school, stems from a recent surge in e-bike related accidents. While the proposal has garnered support from some school board members, it also raises questions about parental responsibility and the role of law enforcement in ensuring student safety.

According to recent data from Costa Mesa, e-bikes were involved in 55 of 126 bicycle accidents in 2025 – approximately 44% of the incidents. This statistic underscores the growing safety concerns surrounding the increasingly popular mode of transportation.

Trustee Andrea McElroy, who championed the measure during a December board meeting, argued that while acknowledging the need for e-bikes for some students, the responsibility for safe operation rests with parents. “They need it, but they have to take full responsibility for the child and it doesn’t fall on the school,” she stated.

Newport Beach recently implemented an ordinance imposing fines or potential impoundment for e-bikes not used in compliance with local regulations. Motor Officer Zach Varela emphasized the importance of parental education and law enforcement outreach. “To make sure that we are getting out to schools and educating the kids,” Varela said. He added that the safest route for students using e-bikes is alongside a parent.

The school district maintains its focus remains on student safety while accommodating healthy transportation options. However, the potential ban highlights a complex interplay between technological advancements, safety regulations, and the evolving needs of modern families. The decision, expected to be finalized after further review, represents a significant shift in how the district approaches student mobility.
