Davis intensifies security measures ahead of packed picnic day
Davis, California – Following a violent incident last year, UC Davis is deploying a comprehensive security strategy for its 112th Picnic Day this Saturday, a massive campus event attracting an estimated 70,000 visitors.
Heightened enforcement and new restrictions aim to prevent repeat incidents
The city and university are implementing significant operational changes, including expanded safety zones with increased fines for violations – particularly alcohol-related offenses – and a complete prohibition of special event permits. This proactive approach follows a shooting at Community Park just blocks from the campus last year, leaving three injured.
Police staffing will be doubled, drawing support from regional partners to manage the anticipated crowds and enforce regulations. Traffic control measures, such as barricades and strategically positioned resources, are designed to streamline movement and improve response times. Todd Henry, the Davis Police Chief, emphasized a commitment to proactive enforcement, signaling a departure from previous reactive strategies.
Beyond immediate law enforcement, the city is activating its Emergency Operations Center and utilizing drones for real-time situational awareness. Support from the Sacramento Regional Incident Management Team will further bolster coordination efforts throughout the day. On campus, UC Davis Police will assist along the parade route, freeing up city officers to focus on service calls.
Phyllis York, a longtime resident, reflects on the evolving nature of the event: “I was a student and it was really a picnic day,” she recalls. “Over the years, I’ve witnessed its growth, and frankly, I’ve noticed a shift in the atmosphere recently.” The restrictions, a response to past challenges, aim to mitigate congestion and ensure emergency services can operate effectively.
But the spirit of Picnic Day, a beloved tradition for generations, remains a priority. City and university officials are jointly promoting a ‘Shared Commitments for Safe Celebration’ pledge, encouraging attendees to participate responsibly.
