Behavioral Health Program Proposal Sparks Debate in Monessen

MONESSEN, PA – A proposal to introduce a specialized behavioral health program at Monessen MiddleSchool is generating significant community discussion, with concerns raised about safety and transparency alongside a recognized need for expanded mental health services for children.

Proposed Program Details

The Monessen School Board is considering a plan that would allow Adelphoi, a nonprofit organization specializing in education and behavioral health for children with emotional and behavioral challenges, to operate an emotional support program within the middle school. The program, if approved, would serve up to 24 students in grades three through eight, utilizing two first-floor classrooms equipped with a separate entrance, dedicated staff, and security measures.

Parental Reactions Divided

The proposal has faced strong opposition from some parents who have attended recent school board meetings and voiced concerns on social media. These concerns center around student safety, the transparency of the program, and the appropriateness of integrating a program for children with significant needs into the middle school environment. However, not all parents share these reservations. One mother stated that she attended the meeting to gain firsthand information and believes many fears are based on misinformation. She expressed optimism that the program could improve access to mental health resources and provide additional resources and revenue for the district.
