Ann arbor schools parents demand financial transparency amid teacher contract standoff
Ann Arbor, MI – Over 900 parents of Ann Arbor Public Schools students have filed a petition demanding greater financial openness from the district, intensifying a growing dispute with teachers who are operating without a contract.

Parents cite budget black box, teachers' financial strain
The petition, circulating widely among parents, calls for the release of detailed budgets spanning the last three years. It also demands a halt to further spending until these financial records are publicly available. The parents are urging the district to resolve the ongoing contract negotiations before finalizing the budget for the upcoming school year.
“What nobody can answer meaningfully is what you would cut from the budget unless they actually know where the money is going,” said Jen Oldham, an Ann Arbor Public Schools parent with three children in the district. She described teachers taking on second and even third jobs to make ends meet, a stark indictment of the district’s financial management.
The previous teachers’ contract expired at the end of 2025, and two rounds of state-mediated negotiations have failed to yield a resolution. The Ann Arbor Education Association (AAEA) vice president expressed frustration, stating that the district and union remain far apart on a fair agreement.
The district maintains it is committed to providing competitive wages while remaining fiscally responsible. In a statement released yesterday, the district affirmed that educators remain covered under the terms of previous contracts and that negotiations with all employee groups will continue in good faith. Another round of state-mediated negotiations is scheduled for March 26.
The situation highlights a broader concern about accountability in public Education funding. The lack of transparency breeds distrust and forces those most impacted – students and their families – to navigate financial hardship.
The district's financial opacity is not simply an administrative oversight; it represents a fundamental breakdown in the relationship between the school system and the community it serves. The teachers' sacrifices are a direct consequence of this lack of clarity.
The upcoming school year looms, and the unresolved contract dispute casts a long shadow over the district's future. The parents' petition isn't just a demand for information; it’s a plea for a transparent and accountable system that prioritizes the well-being of both educators and students.
