A battle is brewing in the South Bay as the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department demands a significant increase in reimbursement from Cupertino, Los Altos Hills, and Saratoga for police services. The county claims the cost of providing law enforcement has skyrocketed, necessitating a 35% hike to break even. However, the mayors of the three affected cities dispute the math, with Saratoga Mayor Chuck Page expressing surprise at the proposed fivefold increase. 'We knew we would see an increase,' Page said, 'but this is a bit more than we expected.'

Cost recovery dispute centers on overhead expenses

According to James Williams, Santa Clara County Executive, the dispute revolves solely around cost recovery for the direct deputies on the ground, as well as investigations, records, and other related services inherent in delivering law enforcement to these communities. Sheriff Robert Jonsen echoed this, attributing the massive increase to the county's adoption of upgraded systems and advanced technology over the past decade.

As the June 30 deadline looms for an agreement, Mayor Page is hopeful a deal can be reached to maintain public safety in his city. 'You can't change law enforcement in six months,' he emphasized, 'but we've got to continue working with them and everybody's got to work together to make this right.'
