Michigan gas prices tick up again, approaching $4 per gallon

Michigan motorists are facing another increase at the pump, with the average gas price climbing 4 cents per gallon in the past week, according to AAA's latest data. Regular unleaded now averages $3.96, a significant rise from last year's price point.

The uptick brings the average price $0.97 higher than this time last month and $0.82 higher than the same period last year. A full 15-gallon tank now costs approximately $59. This isn't merely an inconvenience; it represents a tangible strain on household budgets.

Adrienne Woodland of AAA-The Auto Club Group characterized the situation as volatile. "While that’s a welcome sign for drivers, prices remain elevated and could change again depending on what happens with oil markets and demand," she stated. Adding to the uncertainty, GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, suggests upward pressure will likely continue as long as the Strait of Hormuz disruptions hamper global oil supplies.

De Haan forecasts that the national average will likely surpass $4 per gallon, with diesel potentially reaching $6 and possibly setting new records. Metro Detroit saw a slight decrease this week, averaging $3.92 per gallon – still $0.81 higher than last year. Benton Harbor, Jackson, and Lansing currently report the highest average prices, while Flint, Marquette, and Metro Detroit offer the most affordable options.

The steady climb in gas prices serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of global supply chains and the ripple effects of geopolitical events. Consumers should prepare for continued price fluctuations in the coming weeks.
